The experience took Kien through powerful, lesser-known wartime narratives across the city. It began on L\u00fd Th\u01b0\u1eddng Ki\u1ec7t Street, just outside the Public Security Museum. There, stories from 1972 came alive: tales of Hanoi under heavy U.S. bombing, of families hiding in bomb shelters, and of a population that refused to surrender. Kien paid close attention to how the guide framed the resilience of the people\u2014not just through military triumphs like “\u0110i\u1ec7n Bi\u00ean Ph\u1ee7 tr\u00ean kh\u00f4ng,” – Operation Linebacker II<\/a><\/strong>, sometimes referred to as the Christmas bombings<\/strong> and, in Vietnam, Dien Bien Phu in the air<\/strong>, but through the everyday courage of civilians.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the H\u1ecfa L\u00f2 Prison, the group revisited haunting moments in history\u2014from the The Poisoning at Hanoi Citadel<\/strong><\/a> (Vietnamese: H\u00e0 Th\u00e0nh \u0111\u1ea7u \u0111\u1ed9c)<\/em> to accounts of political prisoners who risked everything for escape. The stories were powerful, though sometimes inconsistent. Still, Kien found meaning in the fragments, knowing that history is often told in layers.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Perhaps the most moving part of the journey was meeting Mr. V\u0169 Hy Thi\u1ec1u, a veteran and wartime artist. His recollections of the 1968 Tet Offensive<\/a><\/strong> and secret missions to paint propaganda murals offered Kien a rare window into the emotional landscape of war\u2014one shaped not only by violence, but by art, message, and memory.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The tour ended with a hands-on activity: participants used old stencil techniques to create mock newspaper headlines. While the instructions were minimal, Kien appreciated the chance to reflect independently\u2014reminded that sometimes, silence allows stories to surface in unexpected ways.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
