In June 2023, a friend asked me for advice on the best place to stay in Hanoi. He wanted a location close to most tourist destinations, so I suggested the Old Quarter. However, upon his arrival in Hanoi, he found it difficult to sleep due to noise from traffic and local businesses. I realized that his trip would have been better if I had recommended the French Quarter, which is just south of Hoan Kiem Lake.

No trip to Hanoi is complete without spending at least a day exploring the historic French Quarter. Stroll around and marvel at 19th-century French architecture, pay a visit to the iconic Hanoi Opera House and Hanoi Metropole Hotel, and try the famous Trang Tien Ice Cream.

If you want to explore outside of the French Quarter, visit Cho Gioi Area with its chaotic second-hand market that has lots of history about the Vietnam War, check out the Vietnam National University, or simply chill and relax at Dien Hong Flower Garden.

Hanoi is also a foodie’s paradise. If this is your first visit to the city, you’ll definitely want to try the famous Banh Mi at Banh Mi Pho at 39 Hang Bai Street and Pho at Pho 10 Ly Quoc Su Street.
