The tour was really interesting! We went to 4 cafes in the French Quarter and Old Quarter. They represented different time periods in the history of Hanoi. Each café had an interesting and rich history. I got the feel of the importance of the café in the social life of the local residents as a place to gather with friends and family. We sampled different types of coffee and tea including the famous egg coffee. Along the way I was able to learn something about the history of coffee production in Vietnam as well as the history of the French period and the war years.
As Vietnam is internationally renowned for it's coffee, it is a must for anyone visiting the country to explore the different varieties of coffee and methods of preparing the drinks. There is no better way to do this than a guided walking tour around the city with a local. My guide was a lovely woman named Huong who is extremely passionate about coffee and enjoys spending her spare time in cafes. She has an impressive level of knowledge about coffee in Vietnam and the culture surrounding it, and was able to suggest drinks based on my individual taste. She was incredibly patient and willing to listen to and answer any questions I had about coffee, but more importantly about anything relating to Vietnam! At the end of the tour, she even gave me a big list of personally recommendations for food around the city. I wholeheartedly recommend this tour for anyone looking for a fun activity, especially in the mornings, as a unique change from food tours or night tours.

Coffee is more than just a drink in Hanoi. It is a daily ritual, a social tradition, and a reflection of the city’s history.
Join us on a journey through Hanoi’s coffee culture with 4 carefully selected stops, each representing a different chapter in the city’s relationship with coffee.
From Tea to Coffee: Discover how tea shaped Vietnamese social life long before coffee arrived. Learn about traditional tea-drinking customs and the cultural shift that followed the introduction of coffee during the French colonial era.

Hidden Hanoi Café Culture: Step into a local café and experience the slow-paced ritual that defines Hanoi mornings. Learn why generations of Hanoians gather daily over coffee to read the news, meet friends, and watch the city come to life.
Modern Coffee & Local Stories: End the tour with a modern Hanoi coffee creation while discussing how the city’s coffee scene continues to evolve. Hear stories about contemporary life in Hanoi and the role coffee still plays in connecting people.
Along the way, you’ll taste different coffee styles, hear fascinating stories, and gain a deeper understanding of why coffee remains at the heart of everyday life in Hanoi.
*We recommend joining the 9:00 AM session, having breakfast before the tour, and avoiding an empty stomach as the coffee tastings contain caffeine.
